About Convoy District

The Convoy District is the geographic area in the City of San Diego that is east of Interstate 805, west of State Route 163, and South of State Route 52. The Convoy District has established itself as the commercial and cultural heart for San Diego’s 450,000+ member Asian & Pacific Islander communities.

What was once a handful of small mom-and-pop stores in the 1980’s and 90’s has now grown into a thriving neighborhood led by multi-generational entrepreneurs that have opened hundreds of businesses over the years. Today, the Convoy District is home to a diverse collection of supermarkets, restaurants, entertainment venues, medical/legal offices, and professional services as well as several dozen cultural institutions such as churches, ethnic media outlets, and non-profit community organizations.

The Convoy District proudly stands among the largest Pan-Asian business districts in the United States.

In 2020, then Councilmember Chris Cate and Assemblymember Todd Gloria championed the Kearny Mesa Business Improvement District and passed a resolution officially designating the area as the “Convoy Pan Asian Cultural and Business Innovation District.”

The designation allowed the Convoy District nonprofit to raise funds and work directly with CalTrans to install 6 freeway signs on Interstate 805 North and South directing visitors and residents to the ‘Convoy Asian Cultural District.’
