Convoy Freeway Signs

Convoy Freeway Sign Fundraiser & Unveiling

In 2022, the Convoy District, the heart of San Diego’s 433,000+ member Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, raised $30,000 to purchase and install six “Convoy Asian Cultural District” freeway signs along Interstate 805 North and South.

What was once a handful of small mom-and-pop stores in the 1980’s and 90’s has now grown into a thriving neighborhood led by multi-generational entrepreneurs that have opened hundreds of businesses over the years. Today, the Convoy District is home to a diverse collection of supermarkets, restaurants, entertainment venues, medical/legal offices, and professional services as well as several dozen cultural institutions such as churches, ethnic media outlets, and non-profit community organizations.

On August 3, 2022, the Convoy District proudly unveiled and began installing the 6 freeway signs on Insterstate 805 North and South.

Joined by Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilmember Chris Cate, Convoy District Chair Tim Nguyen, CalTrans PE, District Division Chief - Traffic Operations Erwin A. Gojuangco, and numerous fundraiser and community supporters, the neighborhood was proud to unveil the sign in front of the iconic Jasmine Seafood Restaurant.

Why freeway signs?

Freeway signs are used to distinguish important historic, cultural and commercial districts. In San Diego, freeway signs identify Little Italy, the Gaslamp District, and Little Saigon, among others. San Diego freeways are used by millions of visitors and residents each year, and signage creates meaningful visibility and awareness of community places.

Installing freeway signs helps promote visitors and customers to Convoy businesses, which have experienced financial hardship through the COVID-19 pandemic. These signs also foster new investment, entrepreneurship, and community events in Convoy, and help share and celebrate the rich diversity of the AAPI community with everyone!

With the signs, we celebrate how special the Convoy District is to the AAPI community, and how it has become a cultural district for everyone in our region. Convoy is home to more than 350 AAPI-owned business establishments and for decades it has been a gathering place for dozens of AAPI non-profit organizations, churches and community groups.

Together, let’s make history and give San Diego’s beloved Convoy District the recognition it deserves!

Background

Founded in 2014, the Convoy District Partnership (CDP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that oversees the transformation of the greater Convoy area into a vibrant cultural center, dining destination, and innovative economic hub. We work to shape the Convoy District into San Diego’s next great neighborhood.

In 2020, the Convoy District Partnership, a non-profit organization representing business owners, tenants and shoppers in San Diego’s Convoy District area, worked with San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate and then-Assemblymember Todd Gloria to officially recognize Convoy as the “Convoy Pan Asian Cultural and Business Innovation District.” This official designation from the City of San Diego allowed the Partnership to work with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to install “Convoy Asian Cultural District” freeway signs that direct drivers and visitors to the Convoy area.

The Convoy District also proudly stands among the largest Pan-Asian business districts in the United States.
